JANUARY 2011 NEWSLETTER / some great news

Artists Space, Collective Parasol, Kling&Bang, L'Appartement 22, Storefront for art and architecture, Viafarini DOCVA. Then there's Arthub, Dispatch, Lucie Fontaine, Ooga Booga, Black & White Gallery, Transformer, White Columns.

Non-profit organizations are growing steadily and intriguingly, offering today’s art scene alternative forms of expression and interaction with the public. And from New York to Kyoto, from Reykjavik to Paris, from Milan to Los Angeles and from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok or Beijing, they are revealing a world-wide trend toward abandoning the traditional institutional channels, going against the market and coming up with their own strategies for the production and distribution of art.

This exhibition, reconfigured for a new venue, responds to guest curator Sasha Okshteyn’s exhibition theme of feminine essentialism. Collette, Jessica Lagunas, Natsu, Alicia Ross and Vadis Turner examine familiar images of femaleness but dress them up with their own versions of gendered identities and iconographies. "Basic Instinct" originated at Black & White Gallery / Project Space, Brooklyn, NY and was on view there from December 17th to January 23rd. The exhibition travels to Flanders Gallery, Raleigh, North Carolina from February 4 to March 16, 2011.
